WMU Richmond Center
PROJECT: Western Michigan University - Richmond Center for Visual Arts
LOCATION: Kalamazoo, MI
DESIGN: The Smith Group
CONTRACT: Competitively Bid
COMPLETION DATE: February 2007
SUPERVISION: Sanford McKenzie and Jeff Alkema
UNIQUE FEATURES: The exterior building envelope of the Richmond Center incorporates approximately 27,000 square feet of custom fabricated natural zinc shingles, copper shingles, copper roofing, copper siding, insulated foam panels and engineered aluminum curtain wall systems furnished and installed by Architectural Glass & Metals. Inc.

The unique geometry of the building facade posed significant challenges to the design fabrication and installation of the raw materials specified for the exterior skin. AGM worked closely with their product suppliers and their internal sheet metal fabrication shop to resolve many of the issues generated by the complex building design. the cooperative spirit fostered by the design and construction team afforded AGM the opportunity to work through key interface details. This enabled Smith Group’s concept of a heightened visual experience to be realized by successfully blending organic materials into a weather tight building facade.
